Yes, colleagues, family and friends are encouraged to attend. Guests may be added to an existing registration or register individually.

What is the attire?
Business or cocktail attire.

What time is best to arrive at the ceremony?
Check in for the ceremony will begin at 2:30 PM.

Will there be video and pictures available of the ceremony?
Yes, NAI will publish the photos and videos following the ceremony.

The NAI Fellows Induction Ceremony will honor recently elected Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. Fellows will be formally inducted by NAI President, Paul R. Sanberg and the U.S. Commissioner for Patents, Andrew H. Hirshfeld. Inductees receive a signature trophy and medal at the time of their induction.

The NAI Fellows Keynote Address will be presented by U.S. Commissioner for Patents, Andrew H. Hirshfeld. The Commissioner will be joining NAI President Paul R. Sanberg in presenting the honorees with a signature trophy and medal.


John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum

The Mayflower Hotel is the site of the 2018 NAI Fellows Induction Ceremony. The historic hotel, a Washington, DC landmark, opened in 1925 and is known for notable events including Inaugural Balls, frequent presidential visits, and other ceremonious occasions. More hotel information here


Seventh Annual NAI Conference

The NAI Fellows Induction Ceremony occurs during the Seventh Annual NAI Meeting to be held April 4-6, 2018. The three day conference brings together more than 400 academic inventors and leaders from 200+ organizations worldwide including senior leadership from universities and not for profit research institutes; interdisciplinary researchers and stakeholders; technology commercialization officers; deans, faculty, and students; and many more. The event features stimulating presentations and networking and serves as an arena where innovation and entrepreneurship in the academic world, leading to local and national economic development is recognized, honored and cultivated.

The conference is open to all and Fellows and Guests are encouraged to register and attend additional events. The Conference Program is available here.

Signature Gala at The Smithsonian American Art Museum

The NAI Signature Gala will be held in celebration of NAI Fellows on the evening before the induction on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 from 6:00 – 10:00 PM. The Smithsonian American Art Museum has been selected as the setting for the Signature Gala. The building was originally created as the first patent office and held that purpose for more than 100 years. The historic patent office’s enormous galleries once displayed thousands of models of patented inventions from the cotton gin to the first telephone. The site is arguably the capital’s first tourist attraction as visitors roamed the galleries to view the latest technological marvels.

Join us in this honorific venue to celebrate our nation’s patent achievements from its earliest beginnings to today.

Fellow Inductee Breakfast (For newly inducted Fellows only)

Fellow Inductees are welcomed to an informative breakfast the morning of the Induction Ceremony on April 5, 2018 from 7:00 – 8:00 AM. Newly elected Fellows will be able to network with one another and NAI Staff and board, while learning about their role and opportunities within the NAI.
